15 Credits AUTUMN

Aims/Description: The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of the crystal structure, mechanical properties and modelling methodologies of metallic materials to lay a foundation for optimising microstructure and processing of metallic components. Topics covered include: (a) fundamentals of metallic bonding and crystal structures (b) defects within crystals (c) x-ray diffraction (d) basic concepts of standard mechanical properties and the underlying physical reasons that produce variations in these properties (e) modelling techniques covering a range of time and length scales for the prediction and understanding of the structure and properties of materials.
