Aims/Description: This module aims to assist students in identifying the client's goals, gathering information to identify means of realising those goals and assisting the client to reach decisions as to the appropriate means of implementing those goals. Also to assist students in being aware of the need to deal with a range of personnel including other lawyers, professionals, witnesses and parties. Students would be aware of the need to take instructions from their principal and other supervising solicitors.

Teaching Methods: The module forms an integral part of other units on lAWT103 and is taught in context.
Assessment: The coursework is based on the practice that students will meet in the office. It takes the form of a memo by a partner in a fictitious law firm that details an attendance on a client. The student is asked to identify the relevant issues, conduct research, and then write a note of advice to the client and record of research undertaken. A word limit is imposed as a way of ensuring that students focus on the relevant issues and cannot benefit from using a 'scattergun' approach to their answer, including information that is not relevant. The coursework has a time limit on it around 8 days. This reflects the task in practice when students will have a finite time to conduct their research although they will generally have to time to reflect on their work. However, resources have to be taken into account and it would not be practical to set a shorter time limit as not all students would be able to access hard copies of reference texts when needed. A non-supervised coursework is deemed appropriate as there is no, one, right answer and consequently collusion between students is obvious. This combination of tasks enables the achievement of the aims and learning outcomes.
