The course enables students to spend, typically, their third year of a BEng or fourth year of an MEng working in a 'course relevant' role in industry. This provides them with wide ranging experiences and opportunities that put their academic studies into context and improve their skills and employability. Students will also benefit from experiencing the culture in industry, making contacts, and the placement will support them in their preparation for subsequent employment.

||The Industrial Placement is assessed through a pre-visit form, one written report, and a poster, or oral, presentation to staff and students at the end of the placement. The placement is assessed on a pass/fail basis. The Year in Industry does not count towards the overall degree classification but must be passed in order to qualify for the ┐with Year in Industry┐ addition to their Degree Certificate.
In year 3 (BEng) and in year 4 (MEng) students work in a degree relevant role. Students complete a pre-visit form identifying the student┐s understanding of the business they are working in, and how their work contributes to the business goals. At the end of their placement they will write one report on the work they have undertaken, and how it interfaces with learning at the University. On their return from their year in industry they will give a poster or oral presentation to members of the academic staff recording and reflecting on their experience. It will also be recommended to students that they complete an online skills/ competencies based professional development diary based on their chosen Professional Institution┐s online model. Where possible they will be advised to use the formal online method.
