60 Credits ACADEMIC YEAR



Aims/Description: The understanding of the demographic, epidemiological and environmental characteristics as well as the organisation of health care system where dental public health activities are planned and delivered are essential in order to meet the oral health needs of the population. This module will prepare students to evaluate the population's oral health needs in different scenarios and plan evidence-based approaches to tackle their needs. The conceptual model of the social determinants of health and the processes and pathways that generate health inequalities developed by the Commission on Social Determinants of Health will be used as a framework for this module. Students will develop skills on how to obtain, organise and interpret relevant information concerning different populations' oral health needs their determinants. In addition, students will take part in an international field trip where they will be involved in different primary health care activities, including planning and conducting oral health surveys in small scale and preventive dental care (eg. application of fluoride varnishes) along with the Unit of DPH members of staff and local DPH practitioners. At the end of the module, students will prepare a case study report on how to plan and deliver DPH using their practical experience in DPH.
