Aims/Description: This module builds upon CHM2105 to extend your knowledge of some more advanced aspects of inorganic chemistry. The course examines organo-transition metal compounds with both - and -bound ligands, placing particular emphasis on bonding descriptions and stoichiometric and catalytic reactions. An introduction to the uses and limitations of single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods is given, addressing symmetry and periodicity, structure determination, and data interpretation. The properties of solid-state materials and their applications in materials science are presented, including zeolite catalysts, semiconductors and high temperature superconductors. The chemistry of coordination compounds is discussed, focusing on macrocyclic ligands, redox and magnetic properties, as well as the coordination chemistry of lanthanide elements.
