Aims/Description: The aim of the module is to provide the opportunity to learn and apply research methods to test a specific scientific hypothesis using the knowledge gained in the previous taught modules of the course (CDL601 and CDL602). A list of projects will be made available and students will be asked to select their top choices. Having been assigned a project of their choice, the students will carry out a 30 week research project, culminating in an oral presentation and dissertation detailing their research and placing their work within a greater scientific context. Students will be expected to join in with the departmental seminars, research group meetings, journal clubs and supervisor meetings, to learn and experience the role of a scientific researcher, by undertaking laboratory or literature based research.

Teaching Methods: In order to achieve all the learning outcomes, students will attend a series of lectures and tutorials, including example-based problem solving sessions, designed to encourage a critical understanding of the nature of scientific research and its application to solving real scientific questions. They will be given tutorials on laboratory health and safety, and receive tutorials to support their presentation and dissertation skills. Students will be taught by their supervisors to complete methods and techniques and guided through the experimental strategy of the research project. As students gain experience and confidence, they will be encouraged to organise their time, plan their experiments, (booking equipment, checking reagent availability) and interpret their results. They should discuss the results with their supervisor and be encouraged/supported to contribute during research team meetings, journal clubs and departmental seminars.
