Pre-requisites: Suitable level 3 qualification eg CC at A level, MM at BTEC, or equivalent


Aims/Description: Mechanical principles have been crucial for engineers to convert the energy produced by burning oil and gas into systems to propel, steer and stop our automobiles, aircraft and ships, amongst thousands of other applications. The knowledge and application of these mechanical principles is still the essential underpinning science of all machines in use today or being developed into the latest technology.

Teaching Methods: Lectures will provide delivery of most of the instructional content. Lectures support all learning outcome. Tutorials will provide further development, recapping and clarification of the themes taught in the pre-contact material. Tutorials will support all learning outcomes. Problem solving/examples classes will include discussion of the answers to pre- contact examples questions and further examples questions and group exercises to develop understanding. Problem solving/examples classes will support all learning outcomes. In addition to the above, laboratory sessions will be timetabled to support all learning outcomes. Independent study supports all learning outcomes. Direction will be provided by the lecturer through the recommendation of sections of relevant textbooks, online resources and examples questions with solutions.
Assessment: Summative laboratory work will assess learning outcomes), for example, students will be required to fill in a proforma during the lab, recording quantitative values and qualitative observations. Assessment is through individual coursework and group presentation. A 3000-word assessment will be submitted to assess all learning outcomes.
