This is a project-based module which aims to set students a real-world professional geographical information systems (GIS) project for an external client using a variety of different spatial datasets and GIS methods. The aim of the module is to prepare students for professional practice in GIS and spatial analysis through a group-work approach which places emphasis on collaboration, team working and objective-setting. This module is taught through a short series of lectures and group seminars. The module is assessed through a combination of an interim report, final report and group presentation.

||1. 3 formal lectures of two hours duration each. This module is all about the development of skills and practices needed to successfully perform the analyst role within a professional GIS setting. The series of three lectures outlines the principles and logistics of such relationships and sets out a method of working and workflows which will help students fulfil L1, L2, L4 and L6 in particular.
2. 6 group work sessions of three hours each. Students are divided into groups by the module leader, after which they are required to liaise with project clients and other team members to facilitate the completion of a specific research project. All group members are given direction by the module leader but it is up to students to apply the working principles outlined in lectures to the task at hand. The focus here is on the achievement of L1, L2, L3 and L5.
3. Client liaison for a total of 16 hours. This time includes interaction with clients (including through the module leader), the presentation at the end of the project and any additional interaction with the client over the course of the teaching and assessment period. Students are given significant guidance on how to manage the relationship. The focus here is on L1, L3, L4 and L5.
4. Independent study.
