Aims/Description: The aim of the module is to provide the opportunity to learn and apply research methodologies to test a specific scientific hypothesis and to develop good laboratory technique in appropriate methods and good, safe, professional laboratory behaviour. A list of projects will be made available and students will be asked to select their top choices. Having been assigned a project of their choice, the students will carry out a 20 week research project, culminating in a dissertation describing their research. Students will be supervised individually and supervision will be the responsibility of an academic member of staff. They will receive detailed supervision from day-to-day supervisors and specific traininng in the techniques to be used, guidance in reporting their results correctly and in preparing a scientific thesis and in the presentation of their scientific plans and results. Students will also be expected to join in with the research group seminars, journal clubs and supervisor meetings, to learn and experience the role of a scientific researcher. Supervisors will assess students (through a questionnaire) for their skill in developing experimental techniques relevant to the project, their good laboratory practice and professional behaviour.
