Pre-requisites: Normally MLT6024 Dutch-English Translation 1 (15 credits AUT)


Aims/Description: This is a practical translation module which will allow students to further develop advanced and professional translation skills in a variety of subject areas and genres. Students will continue to develop an awareness of issues related to translation and language by analysing material from the word to the text level and examining theoretical and practical issues in the translation of authentic Source Language texts. Students will examine frequently occurring translation problems and a range of strategies, which can be used to solve them, as well as learn how to justify their choice of strategy. Module aims are: i) To develop skills and expertise in translation strategies for this language pair; and ii) To develop an understanding of practical approaches to the translation of texts. By the end of the module we expect that students will be able to: i) Understand practical approaches to the translation of texts; ii) Translate a variety of texts into their mother tongue at an advanced level in a manner appropriate for the Target Audience; iii) Justify and explain translation choices made using appropriate terminology; and iv) Approach translations with a professional attitude. Students with non-standard experience /qualification may be eligible for this module on successful completion of a translation test .

Restrictions on availability: Normally for native speakers of English with a BA Hons 2.1 equivalent in an appropriate langague
