Aims/Description: The module aims to assist students in being able to formulate and present a coherent piece of writing based upon facts, general principles and legal authority, in a structured, concise and where appropriate, persuasive manner. It will also assist students in being able to write letters to lawyers, other professionals, clients and other non-lawyers.

Teaching Methods: The module forms an intergral part of others units on LAWT103 and is taught in context.
Assessment: The coursework is based on the practice that students will meet in the office. It takes the form of a memo by a partner in a fictitious law firm that details an attendance on a client. In the memo, the student is asked to write a letter to the client dealing with the issues raised. There is no word limit imposed at this forms part of the assessment process. Too lengthy a letter would not be acceptable to the client. Too short a letter would not deal with the issues in full. The coursework has a time limit on it albeit of around 48 hours, as this reflects the task in practice when students will be drafting a letter under pressure of time, although they will generally have time to reflect on their work. A non-supervised coursework is deemed appropriate as there is no, one, right answer and, consequently, collusion between students is obvious. This combination of tasks enables the achievement of the aims and learning outcomes.
