Aims/Description: A content management system is a management system for organising, editing, maintaining and publishing web and organisational content. In addition to managing the content (as opposed to documents or records), CMSs manage the workflow processes involved in a multi-user environment. Module Aims: The module aims are twofold: to make students aware of the requirements for a content management system (CMS) for intra- and internet delivery; to give students the practical skills to design and implement a full content management system. The students will be made aware of the broad issues, such as requirements, design issues, ethical, legal and security concerns. They will also learn the technical aspects of implementing a small CMS-based website and will design and develop their own system. Learning methods: In the lecture sessions, students will learn: 1. the requirements, advantages and disadvantages for a CMS 2. the technical and organisational issues which underlie the design and implementation of a CMS 3. the legal, ethical and security issues which are required in a CMS 4. the choices for CMS implementation. In the practical sessions, students will: 1. learn the PHP scripting language 2. learn the basics of database design using MS Access 3. learn how to access a database using simple SQL commands 4. become familiar with a selection of open source CMS platforms 5. use an example commercial CMS system. The main project will be a full CMS system which will either be designed and implemented in PHP, or will use an open source application. PLEASE NOTE that this module contains a significant technical component involving some elements of computer programming and database systems.
