Aims/Description: This module will provide students with exposure to academic areas that underpin human communication sciences and their links to graduate destinations lined to their course. Students will attend lectures given by staff from the department on their specialist academic field and related career paths. Topics covered will include linguistics, psychology, education, speech and language pathology. Professional applications related to each of these, and combinations of these, will be taught in lectures and discussed in tutorials (eg audiology, speech and language therapy, teaching). Students will complete coursework which will include an essay about an academic discipline linked to human communication sciences and a report of an interview with a post-graduate student or professional in a relevant field.

Teaching Methods: Lectures, Tutorials, Independent Study
Assessment: The assessment will be a two-part coursework assignment.Part one will be a 1000-word essay on one academic field covered in the lecture series. Students will be required to describe the contribution of that field to the understanding of human communication sciences. This links to learning outcomes 1 and 2.Part two will be a 1000 word interview with a person who is undertaking a postgraduate course or is working in a profession based in the field covered in the student essay. A standard set of questions will be issued by the module coordinator. The interviews are transcribed orthographically, however, these transcriptions are not marked. Excerpts from the transcriptions can be incorporated into the essay. The marking scheme looks at the methodology adopted in order to conduct the interview (for example: what interview style was used, what specific questions/prompts were used and how were these worded). Marks are also awarded for reflection and critical evaluation of the interview. This links to learning outcomes 2 and 3.
