Aims/Description: This module examines the production of urban space as it relates to changing notions and perceptions of `development' in cities of the global south. Drawing from the field of development studies, the unit addresses the transformation of the built environment as a means to explore competing visions of the future emerging at the local, national, and global scale, and to examine their articulation with local histories, cultures and social relations. It provides an introduction to the dynamic social, economic and political processes generating uneven urbanization, and investigates how architecture and urban design can contribute to initiatives that seek to bring about social and spatial justice in cities of the global South. Sessions are organised in thematic clusters, and each session is organised around a number of set case studies and texts for student-led discussion.

Teaching Methods: The module is taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and independent learning. Lectures will deliver the core knowledge required for the unit, and will be arranged into thematic clusters to provide a broad introduction to spatial practice as related to the field of development. This might include themes such as: uneven geographical development, colonial and postcolonial urbanism, participation and diversity in spatial practice. Lectures will be supplemented by further reading and reference list. Each thematic cluster will be supported by a seminar. Seminars will provide opportunities to discuss the thematic clusters. Seminars are student-led group discussions with students presenting and discussing cases related to the topics emerging within the cluster. Students will be required to prepare short presentations for discussion in a seminar. Independent study is essential to the successful completion of the unit. Students are required to acquire theoretical knowledge through further reading and discussions in student led-seminars.
